Follow Up and Care After Your LANAP Procedure

The LANAP (laser assisted new attachment procedure) periodontal regeneration protocol is the only procedure which is FDA approved as a procedure that will create true regeneration. This means that your gum and bone tissue will actually re-grow and return to their original, healthy state.
Your periodontist will give you specific steps for the care of your mouth following your procedure, but there are some general guidelines for what you can expect following the LANAP protocol.

What to Expect
Since LANAP is less invasive than other procedures there will likely be far fewer side effects. The LANAP protocol does not require a scalpel to open the gum tissues and sutures to close the tissues so the healing process is relatively simple.

For 24 hours following your treatment, you should rest with your head elevated and take it easy. The day after your treatment, you can continue your normal oral hygiene routine on the teeth that were not treated by the LANAP protocol. While you should not brush or floss the affected area, you do want to be sure that you’re keeping your entire mouth clean. You can rinse using salt water ( 1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of water) or a rinse provided by your periodontist.

It’s recommended that you eat soft foods and avoid anything hard or sticky as you don’t want food to get stuck in the teeth and gums that were treated. Things like mashed or baked potatoes, eggs, and broth or soft soups are great options following treatment. Long term (the next 6-8 weeks) you should continue to avoid gum, nuts, candy, and even raw vegetables.

If you haven’t already, it’s important to maintain good dental hygiene habits in order to avoid the recurrence of gum disease and to keep your mouth healthy. Oral hygiene really is the best proactive treatment to avoid dental issues in the first place.
