Dos and Don’ts Following Your Dental Implant Procedure

If you’ve opted for dental implants for the replacement of your missing teeth, there are some important things you should keep in mind following this procedure. A big part of the success of this procedure is the steps you take following its completion.
What to do:
In order to ensure that your dental implant procedure will heal successfully, it’s vital that you’re proactive about the care of your mouth. Your periodontist will provide you with specific instructions for the care of your mouth and you new implants following the procedure, and it’s important that you follow them exactly.

In addition, there are some simple things you should continue to do long after your mouth has healed in order to keep your implants, and the rest of your mouth, healthy; maintain good oral hygiene, be gentle when brushing, and eat a well-balanced diet.

Your nutrition and oral hygiene play a big role in the overall health of your mouth. When you skip these things you’re much more likely to experience dental issues in the future, and your mouth will have a much harder time healing after any dental procedures.

What not to do:
There are some things following your oral surgery that you should absolutely avoid doing, such as spitting or sucking through straws, as these can interfere with the healing process. It’s very important that you recognize that healing will take time, and you have to be willing to be patient with that process. Don’t hurry through your oral health routines or rush back into eating “normal” foods. You’re only hurting yourself when you disregard your periodontist’s instructions.

Long term, falling back into old habits such as smoking (one of the biggest contributing factors for oral health problems) or not maintaining your oral hygiene will make it much more difficult for your mouth to heal and will make it more likely that you’ll continue to require extensive periodontal work as these are likely the habits that led to dental issues in the first place.
