Laser Periodontal Therapy Recovery: What to Expect

Poor oral hygiene can result in the development of gum disease — a painful infection that can result in bleeding, inflammation, and eventually tooth loss. Patients suffering from this condition have a few different options for treatment. Scalpel surgeries have been a highly effective way to treat gum disease for decades, but many patients dread the recovery which can be lengthy and uncomfortable.

Laser periodontal treatment is another effective option that offers less pain and a much smoother recovery process. It’s no surprise this innovative treatment has become very popular. Many patients wonder what to expect during and after laser periodontal treatment, so we put together a quick guide about what you should know.

What To Expect During Laser Periodontal Treatment

Laser periodontal treatment, also known as LANAP, utilizes a thin, high-powered laser to sterilize the gums and eliminate infected tissue — all while leaving the healthy tissue in place. The laser also stimulates the gum tissue which promotes healing and stops any bleeding. The procedure is highly effective, even when it comes to treating advanced forms of gum disease.

You can expect the procedure to take about two hours. Before it begins, you’ll receive local anesthesia to completely numb your mouth. In some cases, your periodontist may also need to perform a bite adjustment to ensure the laser can reach all areas of the gums.

Once it begins, you may feel a bit of mild pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any pain as your periodontist runs the laser over the diseased gum tissue.

Laser Periodontal Treatment Recovery Process

The LANAP recovery process is easier for patients than scalpel surgeries; however, you can still expect some discomfort. The good news is LANAP recovery usually only takes a few days, whereas traditional treatment recovery can take a couple of weeks. Here is what you can expect:

  • Minor Soreness and Bleeding – Once the anesthetic wears off, you may start to feel some discomfort, but it can be managed with ibuprofen. Minor bleeding is very common too, but it should be far less than what patients experience with traditional surgery and stitches. Rinsing with warm salt water or applying an ice pack can expedite healing.
  • Gum Sensitivity – Your gums might be extra sensitive to hot or cold temperatures for a short period of time following LANAP. This is completely normal and will eventually subside.
  • Darker Gums – You might notice your gums appear darker in color in the hours and days following LANAP, but they should return to normal in a few days.
  • Soft Foods and Liquids – You should stick to soft foods and liquids the first few days after LANAP to prevent soreness and bleeding. It’s also critical to avoid smoking and alcohol too.
  • Changes To Your Bite – As your gums begin to heal, it’s common to experience a shift in your bite or changes to the way your teeth come together in some areas. This is also completely normal. Your periodontist will monitor changes to your bite to ensure everything heals normally.

Post-LANAP complications are not very common. The laser sterilizes the gum tissue so infection during recovery is quite rare. However, it’s still important to monitor your symptoms. If you experience extended bleeding, fever, or severe discomfort — these are all reasons to return to your periodontist or doctor as soon as possible.
