Four Things You Can Do to Avoid Tooth Sensitivity This Winter

Wintertime can be a lot of fun, especially when the holidays roll around. However, it is also a time of year that is especially difficult for the sensitive oral tissues in your mouth. If you already suffer from sensitive teeth in Ormond Beach, FL, you may be more susceptible to oral pain related to cold weather.
As a trusted periodontist, Dr. Raymond Kenzik urges his patients to take these four easy steps to help minimize tooth sensitivity this winter:

1. Stay Hydrated
Saliva helps to stave off bacteria production, but it is not able to do so when it dries out. Breathing through your mouth due to a stuffy nose can increase your risk of cavities and make your teeth more sensitive. It may not always be possible to keep your nose clear when you have a cold, but staying hydrated may help you fight off illness quicker. You may also consider rinsing your nose periodically with a saline solution, which may help keep your nasal passages clear.

2. Dry Your Toothbrush
Damp toothbrushes are a great environment for bacteria. In order to keep your toothbrush clean and avoid introducing bacteria to your mouth each time you brush your teeth, dry it off after each use. You should also replace your toothbrush regularly, or after you have been sick.

3. Wash Your Hands
You already know how important it is to wash your hands no matter the time of year, and it is especially important to do so after shopping for holiday food and gifts.

4. Eat Healthy Food
The immune system already has to work harder to stave off colds and other illnesses during the winter. Add sugary holiday foods to the mix and you have a recipe for a variety of oral challenges, including increasingly sensitive teeth. Be sure to give your immune system the boost it needs by filling your plate with healthy protein, vegetables and fruits.
